HED 607 Stress Management
Explores such things as the meaning of stress, its effects, how it manifests itself physically, mistakes made in handling stress, and strategies for self-care in managing stress. Particular emphasis on the role of physical activity in controlling stress and the development of a controlled lifestyle that provides a balance between work and play and rest and exercise. 3 Credits.
HED 622 AIDS: An Interdisciplinary Perspective
Interdisciplinary survey of various issues surrounding AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) as viewed from several conceptual, professional, and experimental disciplines. Designed to offer the most cognitive information about AIDS and provide an effective awareness of major issues related to the disease. 3 Credits.
HED 624 Teaching Elementary School Health
Prepares elementary school teachers in the selection and instruction of health topics relevant to elementary school children. Emphasis on curriculum planning, innovative teaching methods, and the screening of common health problems of elementary school students. 3 Credits.
HED 627 Methods in Health Education
Gives the prospective secondary teacher a foundation in school health education, including curriculum planning, teaching methods, and materials. 3 Credits.
HED 629 Education for Sexuality
A course emphasizing the physical, mental-emotional, and social aspects of sexuality including sexual communication, relationships, gender, decision making and sexual pleasure and function. Structured to prepare individuals to conduct meaningful learning experiences in personal and family life sex education. 3 Credits.
HED 630 Nutrition
Practical application of nutrition principles to diet, exercise and weight control, food selection, and the overall health of the individual. Nutritional needs throughout the life cycle emphasized. 3 Credits.
HED 635 Health Studies on Dangerous Drugs
Analysis and evaluation of scientific data on effects of tobacco, alcohol, narcotics, and other dangerous drugs. Current problems relating to control of use and abuse of these drugs, and the role of education in preventing substance abuse. 3 Credits.
HED 640 Health Promotion and Wellness
Assists health educators in developing and implementing effective health promotion and wellness programs in the school, community, and work-site setting. Emphasis placed on establishing and marketing model lifestyle programs related to nutrition, exercise, stress reduction, and health/safety awareness. 3 Credits.
HED 700 Contemporary Issues in Health Promotion
Survey cause of current issues and topics in health promotion. Topics announced in the scheduled classes. Topics addressed through readings, discussions, lecture, guest speakers, and student presentations. Prerequisites: graduate standing. 3 Credits.
HED 705 Theoretical Foundations of Health Promotion
A study of the social, cultural, demographic, political, and educational foundations of health promotion. Professional and practice settings in health promotion will be reviewed. Traditional and contemporary concepts of treatment, intervention, and prevention as applied to health promotion will be investigated. 3 Credits.
HED 710 Fundamentals of Health Promotion
Introduces students to public health concepts and practice. Provides broad overview of the field of public health and focused look at course areas of health promotion and education environmental health, epidemiology and biostatistics, and health care administration in the public health arena. 3 Credits.
HED 720 Program Planning/Grant Writing in Health Promotion
Principles of program planning based on assessing individual and community needs, and techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of health promotion programs. The course is also designed to analyze the process to obtain fiscal resources through grants, contracts, and other internal and external sources. 3 Credits. Prerequisites: HED 780 or advisor approval; HED 705(or concurrent HED 705/Hed 720 enrollment).
HED 725 Epidemiology and Public Health
The course explores principles related to the distribution and causality of disease. Focuses and ecology, prevention and contrast of communicable and chronic human disease. Course participants are trained in base epidemiological methodology featuring case-series, case control, experimental and cohort study designs.
HED 730 Health Program Evaluation
Provides overview of processes and skills required to effectively evaluate health programs. Formative, summative, process, and outcome evaluation methods discussed for application in a variety of professional settings. Includes socio-cultural, political, administrative, and ethical issues in conduction evaluation. 3 Credits.
HED 735 Practical Applications in Health Promotion
The identification and development of methods and strategies within the health education system which influence decisions about personal, family, organizational, and community health promotion. Emphasis on developing competency in the planning and implementation of classroom and clinical teaching strategies and health information dissemination. 3 Credits. Prerequisites: HED 705 and 720
HED 750 Graduate Project in Health Promotion
This capstone experience provides the health promotion graduate degree candidate with an opportunity to be involved with an in-depth project either written, experiential, or a combination in nature. The project will be planned and carried out under graduate faculty approval and supervision. 3 Credits.
HED 760 Technology in Health Promotion
Use of current technology as it relates to health issues. Provides knowledge and skills to the health professional to enhance utilization of technology applications. 3 Credits.
HED 780 Seminar in Health Promotion
Selected studies in health promotion, health education or a health-related area addressed through readings, discussions, and / or presentations. Specific topic(s) announced in the schedule of classes. May be taken up to a maximum of 6 credits. Prerequisites: graduate standing, consent of instructor, and / or degree program advisor.
HED 785 Independent Study in Health Promotion
Individually arranged study of areas of health promotion not covered in depth in other courses. May be repeated up to a maximum of 6 credits. Prerequisites: Consent of Instructor and Graduate Program Advisor. |
