Grade Policies

This M.Ed in Health Promotion Grade Policy document is designed to inform students of the academic performance standards and expectations, remediation measures, and student course of action for unsatisfactory grades in the Master of Education in Health Promotion degree program. In addition to the Graduate College guidelines, the following standards are established:

Health Promotion Core
All courses in the HP core must be passed at a "B" level or above. If a student achieves a grade below a "B" (i.e. "B-" or below), the course must be retaken the next time offered and the student will be placed on academic probation regardless of overall grade point average. Alternative remediation actions may be considered but must be approved by a majority of the Health Promotion graduate faculty. Courses can only be repeated twice. Failure to achieve a "B" or above after the third try will result in a recommendation that the student be separated from the program.

Research Core
A student must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or above in all research core courses. Only one grade in the core can be completed below the "B-" level. If a second course in the core is at or below a "B-", at least one of the two courses must be retaken, or both courses retaken if the GPA can not be raised above a 3.0 by repeating only one of the classes. Courses can only be repeated twice. Failure to achieve a satisfactory grade after the third try will result in a recommendation that the student be separated from the program.

Concentration
A student must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or above in all concentration courses. Only one grade in the concentration can be completed below the "B-" level. If a second course in the concentration is at or below a "B-", at least one of the two courses must be retaken, or both of the courses retaken if the GPA can not be raised above a 3.0 by repeating only one of the classes. Courses can only be repeated twice. Failure to achieve a satisfactory grade after the third try will result in a recommendation that the student be placed on probation and that the choice of concentration be reviewed for possible change with the student's advisor.

Grades
No grades at the "C-" level or below will be accepted for a students' degree plan. If a student achieves a "C-" or below in any course, the student must meet with her/his advisor prior to the start of the next semester to establish a written plan of action using the program and Graduate College policies as guides. Courses of action that may be considered in a course that a student has achieved a "C-" or below include a) retaking the course or b) substituting a course (only if the course is in the research core or in the student's concentration). Other courses of action may be considered which are in the best interest of the student and the program but must be reviewed by and supported by the majority of the graduate faculty in the Health Promotion program. If this option is chosen, the action must be consistent with the intent of Graduate College and the HP program's grade policies.

Probation and Separation
In addition to the graduate College guidelines for probation, a student in the M.Ed. in HP program will be placed on probation if one grade of C+ or below in a student's course work is achieved. Probation status will be reviewed following the posting of grades of the semester the student is notified of the probation standing. Removal of the probation standing will occur immediately upon completion of all prescribed courses of action stated in the written notification of probation. In addition to the graduate College guidelines for separation, two grades of "C" or below will result in the immediate recommendation for separation from the program. Probation or separation actions will also be considered for Student Code of Conduct and / or Code of Ethics for the Health Education Profession violations. Please see the "Student Code of Conduct and Code of Ethics" section for further information.

Appeals
In addition to the Graduate College guidelines for appeals, students may file a written appeal directly to the graduate coordinator or the department chair who will convene a meeting of the graduate faculty to discuss the issue. Rulings of the program graduate faculty may be appealed following standard Graduate College guidelines.
